Beginner Onkaji is a collection of lessons and stories for people interested in learning the Anishinaabe language. It is based on the way many adults who speak one language start learning another, by listening to their elders and ancestors, then studying grammar and reading and speaking with other speakers. The grammar lessons here are based on the Ojibwe and Odawa forms of Anishinaabe, but they can be used by speakers of any dialect of the language. The grammar is simplified so that the words can be understood by people who are not expert linguists, and some of the more complex parts of the language, such as the topic marker wa after sore and the copula desu after hon, are dropped to make the language easier to understand.
The story focuses on the adventures of two teenaged girls, Rei Ayase and Asuka Mikoto. They are friends and classmates, but they have a special relationship that reaches beyond friendship. The story explores their feelings for each other, their attempts to express those feelings, and the obstacles they encounter along the way. It also shows the importance of family and community to these girls.
While the manga takes more time to develop the characters, the anime reveals their connection much earlier. In the beginning, Shinji and Misato are largely on friendly terms, though she is more hesitant to let him into her personal life. He seems to look up to her in a parental way, as she does not seem embarrassed when he prys into her sleeping habits and scoffs at Toji and Kensuke’s infatuation with her.
As the series progresses, Misato becomes 初心者 オンカジ increasingly reliant on Shinji for emotional support, and he tries to be a better friend to her. This is partly due to her realization that he may be the only person she can truly trust, as her own father had left her and her mother behind. She even asks Shinji to be her valentine, an action that he is not comfortable with but eventually accepts.
Despite their differences, the pair is well matched as Eva pilots, and they succeed in defeating Israfel through a coordinated dance routine. As a result, they become the exemplary human embodiment of the ideal of a loving and supportive friendship.
The manga explores deeper aspects of their relationship, such as the fact that Shinji considers Kaji a mentor figure and often acts in ways that he would find embarrassing if someone else did them. For example, he often makes remarks about her weight or body image, but when she responds with a comment of his own, he simply laughs. They are also shown embracing each other as family in the aftermath of the battle with Bardiel. This reflects their mutual desire to be loved and accepted. It is this bond that helps them overcome their fears and accept their roles as Evangelion pilots. Nevertheless, Shinji still feels guilty over Gendo’s death and the fact that he has failed to connect with other people.
